new york always gives tourists something to gawk at, but even the most jaded new yorker will find it hard to shake off this poster’s shocking visual image of the conversion of unused calories into fat, courtesy of the department of health and mental hygiene’s anti-sugary drink campaign.

leaving statistics and pitches to the intellect, this campaign goes straight for the gag reflex and offers pointers to any organization trying to grab employees’ attention and nudge their behavior: dump the immediately forgettable stock images and illustration.

be direct. be emotional. be startling.
