not another fish: it’s the toilet for stock imagery

October 20, 2009

in communication

knowhr’s fab list of what makes (or breaks) great hr communication included one of my bigger pet peeves: the stock image.

it’s not only the happy, smiling people that dominate many a publication and website. it’s that fish jumping out of a fishbowl and the man confidently looking into a telescope while bizarrely standing on an arrow.

what am i to take from this imagery? that i’m a unique individual surrounded by preposterously beautiful and representatively diverse friends with startlingly white teeth? that i can confidently jump into money management now that i’m not scared shitless about the infinite fund options thanks to this great corporate literature? tell me something i don’t know.

it’s time to can the bland stock imagery. your employees aren’t inspired by it; they’re deadened to it. and by it.

use talented designers, creative commons, istockphoto, typography, photos of your own people (by your own people!), your imagination.

any of the above is more likely to keep your communications from the same humble destiny as that lowly goldfish, i guarantee you.

frank, i worked hard for these stained teeth. i’m flashing them.

autom, once you’ve seen one girl in a red tutu, you’ve seen ’em all.
