i’ve always appreciated roundups of good information on others’ blogs, so i thought i’d try my hand at one. let me know what you think.

1. ad campaign that’s more than savvy marketing. volkswagen and ddb stockholm have dreamed up “the fun theory” campaign, which is designed to ultimately move people toward more environmentally-friendly cars (already good stuff, in my book). but first, it’s coaching people to act more responsibly—whether by getting their bodies moving or just throwing away their trash—and to have a bit of fun while doing so. this is just one ad from the campaign; visit the website to see the others.

2. wellness—it’s not just for the u.s. anymore. in a recent sign that concern about obesity rages outside our north american walls, a british bus operator informed certain drivers that they must enter a weight-loss program or transfer to a new position. their weight requirements appear to be dictated more by what the bus seat demands than by health concerns. drivers must be under 23 stone—that’s 322 lbs to those of us on this side of the pond.

3. new health risk assessment regulations may trigger last-minute scrambling.
Final GINA (genetic information nondiscrimation act) regulations mandate that health risk assessments no longer ask about genetic history if collecting the information is tied to incentives, discounted premiums, and lowered deductibles. the announcement might leave companies that tie enrollment to completion of a health risk assessment or use the health risk assessment as the gateway to their wellness program in a pre-open enrollment jam.

4. feelings of workplace security are not the only thing declining. the families and work institute has issued their most recent findings on the state of health in the american workforce: does having a healthy workforce matter. it’s a meaty report that digs into workplace environment, work/life balance, benefits policies, demographic differences, and more. a main finding: employees in workplaces that provide autonomy, work-life fit, and economic security—among other factors—report better health. the study focuses on 2002 and 2008 data.

5. foundation aims at obesity in schools, workplaces, and the marketplace.
a new foundation, the healthy weight commitment foundation, was launched on october 5, 2009. the foundation and participating companies will seek to improve school-based nutrition education and lunch programs, increase or expand workplace obesity- and weight-management programs, adapt product offerings and labeling, and launch a public education campaign. time will tell if this pans out better than the “smart choices” program, another collaboration between nonprofits and the food/beverage industry.
