what have you done for me lately? in defense of recognizing service anniversaries

last week an exchange among fellow members of a communication professional group got my attention. they were discussing service anniversaries. one member shot off that recognizing service anniversaries is nonsense—it’s what you’ve done that matters, not how long you’ve done it.

in my humble opinion, what’s nonsense is that a lousy performer is around long enough to celebrate service anniversaries and that it’s considered too much to stop—just for a moment—to say something other than “what have you done for me lately?” to the rest.
