welcome to my confessional

December 2, 2010

in life,wellness

today i’m guest blogging on authentic organizations about an issue i’ve been grappling with for some time but that has recently gathered steam. CV harquail and i were commiserating on the allure of things we’ve determined are not in our path (now), and she invited me to write about it for her blog. so, here it is…

Welcome to my confessional: I’m feeling the stress of not having it all.

What should be amusing about this is that I don’t even believe in the notion of having it all. But let me tell you, I’m not amused. I know that I don’t have it. And I want it.

Fran–I’m with you on the language piece of this. People share vernacular that convinces them there is an “all” to be had. Rarely do I hear people say they have “enough.”
I try to think reasonably. However, in the past year, my ambitions are getting in the way of this. Which is an annoyance in itself.

funny how “enough” gets quickly translated into “settling” to me. why the heck is that?

Nicely done.

I saw this line in a movie during the film festival…I don’t remember the film: “Money is like sex…only too much is enough.”

I’m not exactly sure what to make of that…but it’s an “all” thing. The money the character referred to had to do with pay…but it also had to do with having the resources to do what he wanted…it’s interesting what you and Paul are talking about with “enough.” I’m at an age now where I’m trying to disburden..to get rid of things. Not sure I’m successful yet…it’s an interesting conundrum you bring up.

thanks, frank.

being a psychiatrist’s daughter (i could stop right there), i naturally have a theory. and it’s a freudian one, of course. the “enough” we shoot for stems from the “enough” we didn’t have. that may be money, could be pats on the head. whatever. no matter what it is, there never is enough. so, never all.
